2024 in Review

2024 is almost over. We’ve worked hard on incredible projects, hosted a variety of events for the game dev community, and much more. It’s been a busy year!

To celebrate, we’re taking a look at what we’ve been up to. We made a video for this, but read on for more deets!

Games, games and more games.

We had the privilege of working on some incredible games this year! One of them is KoalAR, an educational AR mobile game made with Symbio Zoo. In KoalAR, kids explore the environment to take photos of AR animals, unlocking quizzes to learn more about local fauna. There were two parts to this project, the mobile game as well as the online portal for teachers, allowing custom content. It was an extremely fun to design the UI for this game, with chunky buttons and bright colours! In addition, QA testing with enthusiastic students was a great experience, bringing joy to gamers of all ages felt wonderful!

Another project was Life Ready Games, an educational mobile game for visually impaired children to learn essential life skills. With various minigames, UI consideration and hand drawn illustrations, we worked closely with Vision Australia to make sure this game was user friendly and fun. Designing how the swipe gestures would work was an interesting technical challenge, one the team enjoyed greatly.

In addition to developing these games, we helped port several indie games onto various platforms. We ported The Master’s Pupil onto the PS5 and Xbox, alongside Godfeather and Omochapon onto the Nintendo Switch. It’s always exciting to let more players enjoy these wonderful games!

Lastly, we helped out with Ailuri, a gorgeous and charming 2D animated platformer, featuring an endangered red panda and its journey to survive and restore balance to the world. We also worked with McDonalds to make sure their iconic Monopoly and Surprize Fries campaigns went smoothly,  with zany mini games for their app users. Great Northern Brewery and Vimmx also approached us for help with their fishing game and VR medical training program respectively. In essence, we’ve worked on all sorts of projects this year!

Out and about! (Events)

In addition to our work as a game studio and consultancy, we took part in and hosted a bunch of events with the wider game development community. Some highlights were our first ever Pride Edition of WIP Night, our fourth ever Survivor Game Jam, Waypoint Constellations, and the Games Exchange!

This year, Team Noble Steed and Pat won Survivor Game Jam in PAX, breaking Chaos Theory Games’ streak. With the theme “Endlessness”, Reuben and Pat’s game about a Jesus-lookalike and his disciples. In the game, “Jesus” had to endlessly collect food and find new disciples to trail behind him, otherwise human sacrifices would be necessary for survival! The game even featured members of the audience, which likely helped the team score the win.

We also ran our first ever Waypoint Constellations with Waypoint and Serenade games, celebrating Sydney devs and their projects. It was really heartening to create a space for Sydney’s dev community, and we’re really proud to have collaborated on such a large project!

Lastly, we got a grant for the Games Exchange! Thanks to Screen Australia’s Games and Festivals fund, our future Games Exchanges can now host more games and activities. We’ve run exchanges with Malaysia and the Philippines, and look forward to sharing more Aussie and international games next year!

We’re excited for 2025, with more incredible projects and events to come. Happy holidays and see you next year!
