Ring ring! What is that sound and where is it coming from? Let's find out!

Life Ready Games is a series of mobile games designed to entertain and educate visually impaired children. Through engaging stories and minigames, players will pick up and practice life skills from a variety of areas such as independent living, compensatory access, orientation/mobility, and much more.

We designed Life Ready Games with a colour-blind friendly and high contrast palette, as well as several considerations for intuitive gesture and voice control. Follow the adventures of the Household Detective and Detective Dog to grow more independent!

Dev Notes:

As a game aimed at children with low vision, it was a challenge to design Life Ready Games' accessibility and fulfilment of the variety of learning objectives. This led to the need for a fully narrated game, with several different types of mini games and puzzles that would cover these topics.

As an example, we designed the Spatialise Sound minigame to involve device rotation. Players had to rotate their devices to identify the correct sound to hone their ability to navigate noisy environments. Combined with audio, visual and haptic feedback informing users of their result, the minigame enabled players to safely practice their spatialisation skills. With each minigame in the app contributing to our objective, Life Ready Games transformed into a suite of educational minigames embedded throughout the narrative.

In addition, several technical features and UI considerations had to be designed to make the app usable. We introduced voice and gesture navigation in the app, letting low-vision children navigate the game on their own. This way, they can familiarise themselves with similar assistive devices for the future. UI considerations also had to be made to ensure players could enjoy the game. Every screen includes a header to quickly inform users about the screen’s contents, and all elements were designed with high colour contrast and a colour-blind friendly palette.
