KoalAR is an educational mobile app that teaches students about wildlife through exploration. With AR animals that students can track in real life, photograph, and make record of, students become explorers of flora and fauna! Additionally, quizzes reinforce student learning, enhancing retention of syllabus material.
As an app made for students in the classroom, KoalAR also has a online portal for teachers to manage students, create custom lesson plans, craft their own quizzes and set boundaries for unique AR experiences. Ultimately, KoalAR is a useful and fun learning tool for the classroom!
We were approached by Symbio Zoo, who were looking for a gamified solution for classrooms to deliver educational content about wildlife. As a result, we developed KoalAR as a cross-platform solution, enabling teachers to manage students as they went exploring with their own mobile devices.
Dev Notes:
For KoalAR, our goal was simple: We wanted to teach children about wildlife in a fun and engaging way. Our solution was a mobile app that does this through encouraging exploration.
Through AR animals that students can track in real life, photograph, and make record of, we let students become real-life explorers! With every animal found and photographed, students collect more and more data on these animals. This element of exploration made learning about animals much more engaging, improving student retention of the syllabus material.
In addition to using AR technology to deliver content, we needed a way to reinforce what students had learnt. As such, we introduced quizzes and rewards to close the KoalAR game loop. These quizzes made sure students paid attention to the animals they learning about, and became a tangible way for teachers to assess their progress. With every quiz completed, students unlocked new animals, as well as cosmetic rewards for their animal journal, encouraging them to go explore once more.
This game play loop was carefully thought out to make sure the KoalAR app would be an effective educational experience! Combined with the backend portal for teachers to customise exploration zones and their contents, as well as monitor student progress, KoalAR became an effective educational tool for the classroom.

I had a blast working closely with the Symbio Zoo team to iterate on the UI and other visual elements! It's always great fun to refine early sketches into something that feels and looks good!
